Chota Haridas

Chota Haridasa Petition

So Chota Haridasa went to the lower court and his case was rejected and took the higher court and then the devotees…

Then Lord Caitanya said, “Listen if you keep pressing this case of Chota Haridasa then I am leaving here forever, I am leaving Jagannatha Puri, I am going out to the jungle.”

It was quite a jungle in those days. Even now it’s quite a remote area, it’s about 45 minutes from Jagannatha Puri out on the country side. “I am going to Alalanatha and I will stay there quietly and do my bhajana.”

So then everyone left and Paramananda Puri, who is actually Uddhava, he came over there and he tried to petition. That’s high court petition.

He tried to petition on behalf of Chota Haridasa and he was not successful. That when Lord Caitanya, when Paramananda Puri said, “Listen why don’t You forgive Chota Haridasa”, then Lord Caitanya said, “Listen Paramananda, you are like My guru, you are disciple of Madhavendra Puri, you are just like My guru, like Iswara Puri, and like My senior, but listen, if you continue to press this point I am leaving immediately.”

So of course, Paramananda Puri, persuaded in a sit-down. He said “You are svatantra Iswara, my Lord, You are totally independent, You can do whatever You want, what can we say to check You. Ultimately everything You do is for the benefit of the people. Even if we can’t understand, Your intentions are very deep and grave.”

‘haridasa kanha?’ yadi srivasa puchila
“sva-karma-phala-bhuk puman”——prabhu uttara dila

SP: When Srivasa Thakura inquired from Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, “Where is Junior Haridasa?” the Lord replied, “A person is sure to achieve the results of his fruitive activities.”

MS: When Srivasa Thakura came from Mayapur, he didn’t see Chota Haridasa who was a very famous kirtana leader. He was one of the ‘in’ crowd, one of the well-known personalities in Lord Caitanya’s sangha.

So he saw, there is so and so, there is Ramananda, there is Balabhadra Bhattacarya, there is Govinda, there is Kasisvara, there are all the other devotees there, as per usual in Puri. But then they didn’t see Chota Haridasa. So Srivasa said, “Last year he was here, I don’t see him, where is Haridasa?” and Lord Caitanya replied,

“sva-karma-phala-bhuk puman”——prabhu uttara dila

Mahaprabhu said to Srivasa, “A person is sure to achieve the results of his fruitive activities.” sva-karma-phala, Lord Caitanya is speaking in very cryptic language.

SP: Then Srivasa Thakura related the details of Haridasa’s decision and his entering the waters at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna.

You know this is very interesting because Srivasa, in the first verse we heard, he enquired from Mahaprabhu, where is Junior Haridasa? And the Lord simply said he is executing his karma or something.

So although it is a rhetorical question, although Srivasa Thakura is asking the question – where is he? – He knew the answer already.

Cure

The Lord is very happy to accept a devotee’s offering, no matter how it is made. When Murari returned home, he told his wife that he wished to eat. His devoted wife carefully prepared rice with ghee and gave it to her husband. But Murari, absorbed in contemplation on Krishna, took handful after handful of the food and threw it on the ground, offering it to the Lord in this way. The amazing thing is that even though Mahaprabhu was not physically present there at that time, he accepted the offering. The next day he came to Murari’s house and said to him, “I have come to you for medicine. You made me eat so much, insisting that I take and eat. Now I have indigestion. You must give me some water, that will be the remedy for my stomach problem.” Mahaprabhu took water from a jug in Murari’s house, drinking down its entire contents. Seeing this, Murari fainted and all the devotees began to cry. (Chaitanya Bhagavat 2.20.69-71)

Murari would cure anyone who came to him, whether their disease was of the body or the soul. (Chaitanya Charitamrita 1.10.51)

Competition

Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is Kṛṣṇa Himself assuming the part of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī in order to understand Kṛṣṇa. Lord Jagannātha-deva is Kṛṣṇa, and Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Mahāprabhu is Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī.

Caitanya Mahāprabhu's leading Lord Jagannātha toward the Guṇḍicā temple corresponded to Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī’s leading Kṛṣṇa toward Vṛndāvana.

Śrī Kṣetra, Jagannātha Purī, was taken as the kingdom of Dvārakā, the place where Kṛṣṇa enjoys supreme opulence. But He was being led by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to Vṛndāvana, the simple village where all the inhabitants are filled with ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa.

Śrī Kṣetra is a place of aiśvarya-līlā, just as Vṛndāvana is the place of mādhurya-līlā. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's following at the rear of the ratha indicated that Lord Jagannātha, Kṛṣṇa, was forgetting the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana. Although Kṛṣṇa neglected the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana, He could not forget them. Thus in His opulent Ratha-yātrā, He was returning to Vṛndāvana. In the role of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was examining whether the Lord still remembered the inhabitants of Vṛndāvana.

When Caitanya Mahāprabhu fell behind the Ratha car, Jagannātha-deva, Kṛṣṇa Himself, understood the mind of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī.

Therefore, Jagannātha sometimes fell behind the dancing Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to indicate to Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī that He had not forgotten. Thus Lord Jagannātha would stop the forward march of the ratha and wait at a standstill.

In this way Lord Jagannātha agreed that without the ecstasy of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī He could not feel satisfied. While Jagannātha was thus waiting, Gaurasundara, Caitanya Mahāprabhu, in His ecstasy of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, immediately came forward to Kṛṣṇa. At such times, Lord Jagannātha would proceed ahead very slowly.

These competitive exchanges were all part of the love affair between Kṛṣṇa and Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. In that competition between Lord Caitanya's ecstasy for Jagannātha and Jagannātha's ecstasy for Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, Caitanya Mahāprabhu emerged successful.

Expansions

There were two expansions of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu: The first expansion are the six Goswamis, who He entrusted to discover Vrindavan, to establish the holy worship of the Lord's deity and to give the bhakti-grantha, the Holy scriptures to protect the bhakti path.

The secondary expansion of His mission came through Srinivas Acharya, Narottam das Thakur and Syamananda prabhu, who were particularly responsible for preaching the message of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu throughout India.

Gadadhara

gadadhara bhavane mohana Gopinatha
achene, ye hena nanda-kumara saksat
apane Caitanya tare kariyachena kole
ati pasandi-o se vigraha dekhe bhule
dekhi sri-murali mukha angera bhangima
nityananda ananda asura nahi sima
(Sri Caitanya-Bhagavat Antya 7.114)

“In the house of Gadadhara there is most attractive Gopinatha. This Deity looks exactly like son of Nanda Himself is sitting there. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself had held Him in His lap. Even most atheistic person will be changed to see this Deity. By seeing the posture of the body and face with flute Lord Nityananda sheds tears of bliss limitlessly.”
